A simple to ride dual sport bike is the Honda Trail 125. It is not interstate capable but if you stick to secondary routes it gets the job done if you are willing to live with a top speed of 50 to 55 mph. The upside is it has a large rack on the back for hauling gear. Because it is light, 250 lbs., it is easy to haul using a trailer hitch carrier if one is traveling longer distances. Technically the bike comes with a 125 cc engine that gets 100 mpg (150 mi. total range) electronic fuel injection, disc brakes, LED lighting, electric starting, and a semi automatic 4 speed transmission, skid plate, and 17 in. wheels which are a plus for trails and off roading. It is a remarkably versatile bike and it has been taken on the Trans America Trail which goes coast to coast. It should be on your consideration list if you decide to replace the scooter. I got mine recently after years of dithering and it has proven to be a hoot to ride on street and off road. Their reputation is so good that they can be challenging to get new or used. In my case, the three my local dealer ordered sold before they arrived and for extra credit I had to wait two months for delivery. They truly are a thing.

You should consider Honda CT125 as a more capable off-road bike that is still easy to ride. It's manual gearbox but centrifugal clutch

Sees thumbnail, yeah I don't think a rectangular box would be a great adventure vehicle. As for the scooter, be careful. This may actually be the most dangerous thing you've ever done. Even more so than last week's video (at least to a layman like me). Road debris would be the thing I'm most concerned about along with weather and big semis.

Perfect. Those scooters are plenty fast. Travel by 2 lane till you are more experienced. Empty roads and all that. Over 50 yrs experience and Travel by cycle is "the best". I don't 'camp', I just stop somewhere and sleep. Field turn outs. Side of the road. Remember you are usually only minutes to an hour from food or shelter when on wheels. I carry snacks and water in case I want to just stop. Sounds like you chose a good route.

You chose wisely! There’s no point in doing a Coast-to-Coast unless you’re on the East Coast. Living in Front Range Colorado, it’s always actually depressing when I have to drive east.

  • @FB-gm6el

the only reason that scooter is "impractical" is because of the current driving climate in the USA: the callousness, selfishness, disrespect, bullying, and utter disregard for law, common sense, and safety is far beyond "out of control" status... one thing i can assure you is that you are 100% making the right choice avoiding the south and the east, for the reasons i mentioned, and because of population density and weather. there is very little open land for camping/recreation east of the rockies...unless you're into paying $90 to "camp" at a KOA.

Glad you had a great motorcycle trip! Looking forward to the videos! If you ever get to Victoria BC on Vancouver Island, I can show you some great roads, seaside scenic twisty country roads. I've been riding here for decades and have toured much of the US and Canada over the years. Currently own a Yamaha WR250R dualsport and Suzuki Vstrom 650 X adventure. Bikes are great!

If you do end up doing the Olympic Peninsula be sure to take in Cape Flattery. It is a 3/4 mile hike from the parking area to the Western most point you can walk to in the lower 48. And it is breathtaking! BTW, the last time I saw you, you had a place in Idaho. What changed and when?

Congratulations & safe travels. I'm 62 years old & have been riding scooters/motorcycles for over 50 of those years, I will tell you the same thing I tell all new riders "When you get on a motorcycle, you become invisible, no one sees you." Just today as my wife & I were riding our large CanAm Spyder down the freeway, a car proceeded to come into our lane right next to us. People just don't look before they change lanes, you have to always be watching the other drivers. My wife & I still love riding motorcycles & always will as do both of our adult sons. If you can climb mountains & be safe, you will be safe on a motorcycle. I hope some day we can ride together & swap stories about our adventures.
